Do you know someone who really has their S*!t together? What does it even mean to have it together?
Is it knowing exactly what you want in life? Is it getting things right all the time? Is it about not making silly mistakes? Or is it about having a stunning IG account?
Whatever it means, It always seems like other people “have it together”.
Other women don’t make silly mistakes. Other women always know the right things to say and do at just the right time and other women always look just the part, regardless of what they’re wearing.
This is NOT me. Because I do make mistakes, big ones and silly ones.
Like the time I got off the bus at the wrong stop ( Yes, I was on a bus, this is a long time ago but it still horrifies me). For some reason I was in a daze and followed the guy in front of me, then I realised it was the wrong stop and tried to get back on. Only the bus driver had started driving away, while closing the door. So, basically, I got stuck between the doors of a moving bus!
Or the time I drove down the road wondering why people were looking at me funny and what that funny noise was, only to find there was a traffic cone sticking out from the front of my car. Oops!
And then there’s the time I pulled into a petrol station and the front bumper of my car came off. Literally, it just dropped off.
I could go on, but I won’t. The point is that these things happen and they have happened to me. But when I look around all I see is people who “have it together”
So it got me thinking. Is this just the way of the world? Are some of us destined for a life of constant humiliation and hilarity while others get to glide though unscathed and looking fabulous at all times? Because I don’t remember signing up for that!
I don’t believe that for a minute! The fact is that everyone makes mistakes and no one’s perfect. The only difference is that for some of us, our mistakes stick out to us like beacons, or madonnas boobs in that cone bra ( you know the one).
In reality, what you see on the surface isn’t the full picture. You will never truly know what’s going on for people and how much they really have it together and you won’t understand the journey they might have gone through to get to such a seemingly perfect place. After all, everyone wants to be seen in the best possible light on the outside, whether that’s in social media or in person regardless of what the true story might be, and that’s human.
The only thing you can do is focus on yourself and what you’re doing. More importantly, stop focusing so much on your own flaws and going over every little mistake you’ve ever made with a fine toothed comb.
So stop obsessing over other peoples Facebook pages and Instagram accounts. Everybody wants to be seen as having it together and perfect — and some people might be. But what you will never see is the time they messed up royally and ugly cried in the shower, curled up in a ball. Because no-one is posting those pictures!
I know what I want to do with my life. I want to help amazing women discover what they want to do with their lives. That’s where I have it together.
But I’m not perfect, I sometimes worry what other people think ( who doesn’t), I get trapped in bus doors ( but I walk away with my head held high), I have a wardrobe full of clothes I never wear but can’t bring myself to get rid of and I still cringe when it comes to baring my soul out there.
I write all is this because I know I’m not the only person like this, and I want to help anyone out there who might be in the same position. Because it’s ok.
If you ever feel a bit insecure
If you don’t always feel “together”
If you go through periods of time thinking, what the heck am I doing?
I’m here for you.
Because in the end,
In the words of Carrie Bradshaw: “I will never be the woman with perfect hair, who can wear white and not spill on it, and chair committees and write thank you notes and I can’t feel bad about that”
All we can be is ourselves and you should be the very best YOU that only you can be, perfect or otherwise.
P.S I do write thank you notes though x
