So often, we’re afraid to go after the things we want because we fear that our lack of previous experience in the area will be a barrier to our success. This stops us from potentially realising our truest potential and achieving the happiness and success we’re capable of and deserve in our lives. This post is part of a series of stories about women who have made a success of themselves and built profitable businesses in industries that they previously knew nothing about.

Does it seem like every successful entrepreneur was dreaming about starting their own business since the day they were born and by the time they were in primary school they were already selling lemonade by the gallon and making enough money to put the local shop out of business? What about the fact that every successful entrepreneur always hated their job?
It seems to be the most common story we hear. You know, the one about the terrible employee who did their own thing and was their bosses worst nightmare.
But if you thought that only the worst employees make the best entrepreneurs, or that you need to have a string of startups behind you before you’ve even started Uni, then you’d be wrong. This certainly wasn’t the case for the Founder of Mutual Attraction and the seemingly unlikely entrepreneur ( at least by those standards) has gone on launch, build and grow multiple successful businesses.
Caroline Brealey was working in the voluntary sector and living in London. She didn’t hate her job, and she had never had fantasies about starting her own business. In fact, she would describe herself as a model employee.
Then one day…
Deep down something started to change and Caroline started to crave the kind of flexibility and lifestyle that can often only come from being your own boss. Like not working on Fridays, working wherever you want and wearing jeans to work, or whatever you like for that matter.
Eventually, she decided something had to change.
So, with no previous experience or contacts in the dating world, and only her own dating life experience to go on, Caroline decided to enter the secretive matchmaking world and set up Mutual Attraction.
My biggest challenge was, I didn’t understand the matchmaking world. I was basically launching a business in an area which I really didn’t know anything about. I knew about dating, I definitely knew a lot about that, but I didn’t actually know how a matchmaking business worked. Now what would have been sensible would have been to have approached matchmakers and maybe one an internship or tried to get a job with a matchmaker for a little while but I was already in by this point, so it was a challenge to get to grips and understand what I was going to be offering
But despite Caroline’s lack of previous experience or knowledge about the niche, Mutual Attraction has gone on to become one of London’s leading matchmaking agencies and the business has since expanded and now offers training for budding Matchmakers, keen to start their own businesses.
Caroline has also gone on to greater level’s of success and is now the Co-Founder of a further business venture League of Her Own, Which she co-founded with Charly Lester. The unstoppable and inspiring duo have also now released their book, The Female Entrepreneur.
Key Take-Aways from Caroline’s Story
You can start a business in any industry and you definitely don’t need experience in it. But doing a little research can go a long way.
Whether that’s reaching out to people already in the industry, or getting an internship. This could help bridge the gap between the experience and knowledge you already have and what you need to know and could be the thing that makes all the difference.
