Behind the Work
The ideas, experiences, and lessons that shape the people behind the work.
In conversation with Dr. Elizabeth Kathryn, Psychologist, Intuitive Coach, and Healer
A conversation on psychological insight, spiritual healing, intuition, and why true reinvention begins with a different relationship to yourself.
Understanding ourselves can be life-changing. Yet there are times when we can explain a pattern in precise detail and still find ourselves living inside it.
Dr. Elizabeth Kathryn encountered the limits of insight from both sides of the therapeutic relationship. With a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and more than a decade of experience as a therapist, she understood how emotional patterns form and how the past continues to shape the present. During a profound period of personal healing, however, she was drawn toward energy work, intuitive development, channeling, mediumship, and goddess-centered practice. These approaches reached aspects of her experience that psychological understanding alone had not moved.
Today, she brings those worlds together in her work with spiritually inclined women. Rather than treating psychology and spirituality as competing explanations, she sees each as capable of reaching a different layer of the person.
Her work is also rooted in a particular understanding of change. Reinvention is not simply an external shift in role or circumstance. It begins with a changed relationship to the self, including the parts that have been wounded, rejected, or made to feel unworthy.
In this edition of Behind the Work, Dr. Elizabeth Kathryn reflects on intuition, self-love, spiritual guidance, and the difference between knowing why a pattern exists and being able to release what it still holds.
What originally brought you to the work you do today, and why does it continue to matter to you?
My work as an intuitive coach and healer has roots that reach all the way back to childhood. Even as a little girl, I was drawn to the Mysteries. You’d often find me at six or seven years old wandering into the adult section of the library, straight to the shelves on metaphysics, intuition, tarot, magic, mythology, and goddesses. Something in me was always reaching toward that world.
As I grew up, that curiosity took a more structured form. I was fascinated by why people behave the way they do and by how we heal, and that led me to earn a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. I worked as a traditional therapist for over a decade, and I genuinely loved it – I loved my clients and the depth of the work. But at a certain point, I began to feel that something was missing.
Around that same time, I entered my own dark night of the soul. Some significant relationship ruptures cracked me open and showed me I needed to do deeper healing than I had ever done before. As I moved through that, I found myself drawn to forms of healing that lived outside the therapy room – energy healing, mediumship, channeling, intuitive and spiritual coaching, goddess circles, past-life healing. When I began integrating those practices with what I already understood psychologically, my own healing didn’t just progress. It quantum leaped. I could gain insight and process my emotions through one lens, and then energy work and ritual would move something on an entirely different level.
The deeper I went, the more my life transformed. As I truly began to understand energetics, spirituality, and manifestation, I watched myself come into alignment with who I actually am. I manifested the work I longed for, my soulmate relationship – now my husband – our dream home, travel, and soul-aligned clients. Once I’d lived that, I simply couldn’t return to therapy the way I’d practiced it before. The old way was powerful, but it didn’t hold the totality of the human experience or use the full range of tools available to us for healing.
So I began weaving everything together – everything I’d learned professionally and everything I’d lived personally – into the work I do now: intuitive readings and coaching, energy healing, manifestation coaching, and facilitating goddess circles and other spiritual and personal growth workshops. It’s work that taps into intuitive and spiritual guidance to shift the blocks standing between my clients and the soul-aligned lives waiting for them. This work continues to matter to me because I know what it feels like to live a life that is soul-led – to wake up each day using my intuition and my gifts and doing my purpose work in a bigger way. I want that for other women. And there’s something larger at play too: as each woman lifts herself, heals, and raises her own vibration, she raises the energy of the collective. I hope to be like a candle that lights other women’s flames, so they can glow as brightly as possible and send a positive ripple out into the world.
What belief, philosophy, or truth sits at the heart of the work you do?
At the very heart of my work is a single belief: each of us is a piece of the divine. At the soul level, you are already the energy of love, abundance, joy, and well-being. That is your natural state. What obscures it is everything we accumulate as we move through life – the wounds, the limiting beliefs, the painful experiences that slowly convince us we are something less than that.
So the work isn’t about becoming something new. It’s about healing and releasing what’s been layered on top of who you already are. As you release that wounding, you naturally come back into alignment with the frequency of love and abundance that you’ve always been – and from that place, you begin to magnetize the experiences that are truly meant for you: calling in more love, abundance, and personal fulfillment. I see every woman I work with as a beautiful, powerful soul who simply needs to come home to herself and remember the power, the beauty, and the love she already carries within. As she remembers her own power, she becomes able to consciously create a life that feels right and joyful to her.
The work isn’t about becoming something new. It’s about healing and releasing what’s been layered on top of who you already are.

What does true reinvention look like beyond changing careers, roles, or circumstances?
For me, true reinvention always begins inward. It isn’t the outer change – the new role, the new title, the new city – that defines it. It’s the work of building a different conceptualization of, and relationship with, yourself, which then ripples outward into every area of your life.
So much of this is a self-love journey: coming to see, accept, and love all the different parts of yourself. It means recognizing the limiting beliefs and assumptions you’ve been operating under – the ones rooted in past experiences – and gently dismantling them. As you do, you open to broader perspectives about who you are, about the world, and about what’s actually possible for you. Your entire inner landscape shifts. That’s where the real reinvention lives. And when reinvention does involve something like a career transition, it’s not just about the shift in title or responsibilities. It’s about stepping into a new identity – a new set of thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and actions that’s different from the one you held before. I’ve walked that road more than once, and certainly my most defining reinvention has been the journey from therapist to healer and priestess. What I’ve learned is that it comes down to connecting deeply to what feels true for you – and then having the courage not to shrink from it, but to step fully into it and share it with the world.
For me, true reinvention always begins inward.

What does intuition mean to you beyond the way it is often discussed online?
To me, intuition is two things woven together. It’s your own inner wisdom – the quiet knowings or the inner voice that guides you. And it’s also the way the Divine, your spirit guides, the universe – however you conceptualize that greater intelligence – speaks to you and moves you toward what’s truly meant for you.
What often gets lost online is that intuition isn’t vague or one-size-fits-all. It’s made up of the intuitive senses, and the universe speaks to each of us specifically and uniquely. So a huge part of becoming more in tune with your intuition is understanding how your guidance actually comes through for you – your own particular language for receiving it – and then giving yourself time every single day to get quiet enough to tune in. This is central to my own life, and to the work I do with clients. As much as I possibly can, everything I do is intuitively guided, in both my work and my life. And that ability didn’t appear overnight – it grew from understanding the interplay between my intuitive senses and my guidance, learning how it tends to come through for me, and then slowly learning to listen to it and trust it. Helping my clients and students build that same relationship with their own intuition is some of the most meaningful work I do.
What has your own journey taught you about trust, intuition, or inner knowing?
What I’ve come to know deeply is that you are always being guided – and that everything in life is unfolding for your highest growth, learning, and good. When you can learn to surrender and trust what’s happening, even when it’s painful, even when it’s confusing, even when you can’t yet see where it’s leading, it opens the door to greater expansion, awareness, joy, peace, and love.
I’ve watched this play out in my own life again and again. The very things that felt, in the moment, like everything was falling apart turned out to be exactly what set me on the path toward the life I now have. That’s the gift of it. When you begin to truly tune into your intuition and trust what’s being presented to you, life softens. It doesn’t mean the challenges disappear, or that there won’t be pain – but it all becomes part of a beautiful, ever-unfolding journey rather than something happening to you. You stop bracing against your life and start moving with it.

What patterns do you most commonly see in the people you work with?
No matter what a client comes to me for support with – more love, a new relationship, greater abundance, deeper fulfillment, a fuller sense of personal success – the same underlying patterns tend to surface.
The first is scarcity and limiting beliefs. So many of us speak to ourselves with a harshness we’d never use on anyone else, and instead of looking toward what’s possible, we keep reinforcing old stories about what isn’t possible for us. Those stories quietly run the show until we bring them into the light.
A second pattern I see, especially in the very empathic women I work with, is taking on other people’s emotions and energy, over-giving, difficulty setting boundaries, and people-pleasing. This one matters enormously, because when you’re constantly absorbing everyone else’s feelings and burdens, it becomes nearly impossible to stay in your own energy – and you have to be in your own energy to create the life you actually want. So much of my work with clients is about teaching them how to manage and protect their own energy. And underneath all of it, the deepest pattern is almost always the relationship with the self. A great deal of what I do is helping people with their self-love journey: helping a woman see herself with new eyes, find genuine compassion for herself, do the inner-child healing, and come home to a sense of wholeness, love, and peace within. When that shifts, everything else begins to shift with it.
You bridge psychological insight and spiritual healing – what does that integration make possible that neither approach could on its own?
For me, the integration is everything – it’s the reason my work goes where it does.
My years as a therapist gave me a deep understanding of the mind: how emotional patterns form, how limiting beliefs take root, how the past quietly shapes the present. That work is powerful. But over time I came to feel its edges. Insight alone, I realized, doesn’t always move what’s held in the body and the energetic field. You can understand a pattern completely and still feel stuck inside it.
That’s where the spiritual and energetic work comes in. When I begin a healing session, I open to intuitive guidance first – connecting with my client’s own spiritual support team and my own – so that insight can come through about where she is and what’s ready to be healed. From there, we move through heart-led conversation to uncover the emotional patterns, and then we work directly with the energy system to release the charge held beneath them.
What the integration makes possible is wholeness. The psychological work brings the clarity and the understanding. The energetic and intuitive work releases what the understanding alone can’t reach. Together, they let a woman move beyond simply knowing her patterns into actually transforming them.

What do you hope people feel, remember, or take away after experiencing your work?
More than anything, I hope my clients and students walk away seeing themselves as completely and divinely worthy of everything they would like to experience. That’s the foundation – because once you truly know your own worthiness, everything else becomes possible.
I hope they feel empowered to begin moving toward what they want, to set powerful intentions that really speak to their hearts, to take the aligned action, and to fully believe it’s possible to create whatever their dream life looks like. And I hope they carry with them the ability to stay centered and aligned – energetically, spiritually, and emotionally – and to listen to and trust their own intuition, so that they can return again and again to a place of happiness and genuine well-being no matter what life throws at them. If a client leaves knowing how to come home to herself in that way, then I’ve given her something she can keep for the rest of her life.
